Looks Nasty -- I guess it is a winmodem after all.
lists> 2. the windows drivers are huge
Yup, try this out -- Add a "generic internal 56.6 (fax/)modem"
and remove all other "modems" that all installed.... and try dialing
out using the generic modem .. and if it doesn't work, I guess you can
be really sure that your modem is a winmodem after all.

Yup, that's true.

Most Rockwell modems are supported, as I see it. Another
interesting thing with all Rockwell Chipsets is this ... get a Hex
Editor and get the Hex Equivalent of "ATH0" and use "ping -p foo" ,
where you are going to ping some guy with that "pattern" (-p) and you
can ping some buddy that you know ... and chances are his modem will
receive a SIGHUP, and start re-dialing.. kinda like the Ping Of Death
or something.. Just one ping, and he's offline ! ;)
Sadly, this works on my other modem too :( .. and yes, check
your syslog/messages .. you will notice that its logged too,..

I'll email my buddy in bangalore .. but last I remember, they
ditched it for a Xircom NIC/modem card .. and personally, I use a
Xircom Credit Card PCMCIA internal modem on this laptop, too.

Yeah, D-Links are cheap and work(tm).
