Hello Bhavin,
you can bet on any compaq Presario 1600 series laptop for 100% linux
compatibility!
I am having a Compaq Presario 1685(380 Mhz AMD K6II, 64 MB RAM, ATI Rage LT
Pro card
with 8MB VRAM and 2x AGP, ESS Solo1 sound card, 4x DVD, 12.1" TFT, Lucent
56
k Winmodem)
Basically all the configurations are similar except the processor speed,
DVD
speed and hdd capacity
for 1600 series.
I have installed Mandrake Linux 7.0 on it after repartitioning using FIPS.
The installation detected everything
including ATI Rage LT Pro gfx card, and the sound card (no alsa please !).
Even I was able to play DVD using nist (without the sound) in Linux. nist
comes with the Mandrake cd. Even the latest
version of the Linux DVD player(OMS) has got alpha support for ATI Rage Pro
based chips (so you get all the hw acceleration, motion compensation
stuff).
Somewhere I have read that XFree86 4.0 have got framebuffer support for ATI
Rage Pro based cards. I am not sure whether that is applicable for ATI Rage
LT Pro(LT=Laptop) based cards. I haven't tried so far.
Also a linksys PCMCIA 10/100 card worked perfectly under it.
The best part is all the devices are supported out of the box with all APM
support. No tweaking necessary !
Plus it has got lucent winmodem, for which there is a binary only driver in
linux (www.linmodems.org). The other laptops which is known to work
perfectly with linux are the IBM thinkpad series, SONY VAIO.
Generally all the laptops happily runs linux, except the winmodem part. So
look for laptops whose winmodems are supported in Linux (if you don't want
to buy a PCMCIA based modem). AFAIK IBM thinkpad, SONY VAIO and COMPAQ
Presario (not all models) use Lucent winmodem.
HTH,
Kousik
