I use the following .fetchmailrc (taken directly from the fetchmail man page):
(jediland is my computer and mailserver is, well, the mailserver)
Of course, you should be able to login to the server via ssh without a
password.
defaults proto IMAP user binand password "xxxxxxxx"
poll mailserver via jediland port 11143 options nodns fetchall:
preconnect "ssh -f -L 11143:alice:143 alice sleep 20 < /dev/null &> /dev/null"
