Subject: [LIH] i810querry
My system configuration is :
Intel i810 chipset motherboard with AC97 audio
Intel Celeron 433 Processor
32 MB PC100 SDRAM
Samsung 55V Monitor
IBM 16.8GB HDD
48X LG CDROM Drive
Logitech FirstMouse
Keyboard, speakers etc.
I installed Linux on the above system from a PCQ Red Hat Linux 6.2 (Zoot) CD
exactly as per the directions given in the page
www.exocore.com/linux/..../i810-3.htm (except that I avoided some server
packages). The installer automatically detected the display adapter as
i810.
It appeared...
PCI Entry: Intel Corporation|82810x]
CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller]
X Server : SVGA
I did not attempt to configure X anytime during the installation. I had
given
a host name "DEVILS". So after booting into linux, the display seemed as :
Red Hat Linux release 6.2 (Zoot)
Kernel 2.2.14-12 on an i686
DEVILS login :
I logged in as root and run Red Hat's Text mode setup utility setup
[root@DEVILS /root] # setup
Selected X Configuration. It probed the display adapter as :
PCI Entry: Intel Corporation|82810x]
CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller]
X Server : SVGA
As my monitor was not listed, I choose Custom and then selected horizontal
sync range as :
Extended Super VGA, 800x600 @ 60Hz, 640x480 @ 72Hz
I selected vertical sync range as :
50 - 100
My monitor manual specification reads :
Horizontal Synchronization : 30 - 55 kHz
Vertical Synchronization : 50 - 120 kHz
Maximum Resolution : 1024x768
I DID NOT configure the default screen resolution and depth by auto
probing.
Said Don't Probe when prompted. Set video RAM as 4 MB, Clockchip as No
Clockchip Setting (recommended), Skipped Do you want to run 'X -probeonly'
now?
I selected video modes as 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 - All at 16 bit color.
And tested configuration at the Starting X dialog box. I got a message as
follows :
Error
There is a problem with your X configuration. You may go back and modify
your
configuration or exit now
Then I typed X at # prompt after exiting from setup. It displayed a message
as
:
Several '(--)SVGA : Mode ......................... Deleted'.
Warning : The directory "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType" does not exist,
Entry deleted from font path.
(**) FontPath set to "unix/:-1"

0xdc000000
gart allocate : Cannot allocate memory
(--)SVGA: GART: allocation of 1024 pages failed at page 0.
Fatal Server Error:

Then I edited the XF86Config file created by X Configurator. Under Section
"Device", I changed Identifier to "i810" and Section "Screen", Device to
"i810". I did this as per the instruction given in
"/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/README.i810". After that when I typed X at #prompt,
the screen went blank. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+backspace did not make any
difference. Then for getting into another login shell and killing this X, I
keyed the "window" key. Then instead of logging in, I cycled through login
shells to reach that one. Then the X had terminated with an error message :
.........................................
FontPath set to .....
(**)SVGA: Intel Unknown Chipset (0x7121) rev 3, Memory @ 0xd8000000,
0xdc000000
Segmentation Fault.
Then I replaced my XF86Config in /etc/X11 with working one given on page
www.exocore.com/linux/..../i810-9.htm. After that when I typed X, I got the
just previous message itself.
As these steps didn't work, I went through the section on troubleshooting
given on page www.exocore.com/linux/..../i810-8.htm.
I added the line : alias char-major-10-175 agpgart in
/etc/conf.modules as it was missing.
There was already a character device file named agpgart under /dev with
major
number 10 and minor number 175. It also was user and group write-able.
# uname -r
I got : 2.2.14-12
It was not 2.2.14-8. But I hadn't done anything for it to come like that.
But the agpgart.o module did exist under /lib/modules/2.2.14-12/misc
When agpgart was mod-probed dynamically on X startup.
# X -probeonly
# lsmod|grep agpgart
I got : agpgart 17852 0(autoclean)
What could be the problem? How can I know whether my motherboard is 'Kobian'
or not? I don't see written "Kobian" anywhere on the motherboard. I could
successfully configure the sound with ALSA sound driver provided on PCQ Red
Hat Linux 6.2 (Zoot) CD (June 2000) and is working fine. Do I need other
drivers or anything to get X started? If yes, where can I find them?
I am looking forward to your advice. Please reply in detail to :
