Khader,

Forgive me for pointing out the obvious. :) 

I think your best strategy would be to be less ambitious. Why not try
to collate space to, say, two or three machines. All the NTs one,
Unices on another, etc. That way you could optimise the method that is
native to each system for performance and stability.

IMHO, that'd be your best compromise solution.
