the flicker could be because of wrong frequency.
normally super vga 1024 by 768 60hz non interlaced 50-70 works for me 
with most 14" monitors however i reccomend you keep your resolution at 
800x600 with highest colour depth possible..note that wrong settings 
can damage your monitor.you have not shown the monitor section of your 
XF86Config file .
