If you are installing RPMs, either fresh install or an upgrade, 
always do rpm -Uvh <rpmname>. LILO is stopping becoz it can't find 
the kernel it thinks it should. And since you had the install CDs, 
you could have used the CDs to rescue by boot: rescue, or a live FS 
CD. The SuSE and Slak editions are great.
