Everything was allright. You should have edited the file /etc/lilo.conf
before running lilo. See
man lilo.conf
man lilo
to install rpm file do this
man rpm
rpm -h
rpm -Uvh file-to-install.rpm
then edit
/etc/lilo.conf
then do
lilo -t -v -v
if there is no error above, then do
lilo
Also keep a SuSE CD handy for a CD based rescue system
