convert is one of the easiest commandline solution for converting
image files but does not seem to have good compression algo. Try
converting a ps file to gif using convert and using xv. the filesize
difference is enormous.

I checked. gs does have a DEVICE for jpeg. both for color and
grayscale.
        try
        gs -sDEVICE=jpeg -sOutputFile=xxx.jpg [options] <inputfile.ps>
        gs -sDEVICE=jpeggray [as above]
some other options may be needed to start it from a script so that
it does not go to the GS> prompt.

But what happens when i try to convert a multipage ps file to jpg or gif??
Only the first page seems to be there, Although the gs shows that it is
converting all the pages (it gives <<showpage .blah blah...press return>>)
