Not necessarily. My personal experience. A brand new system with a
Sony cd drive. Doze installed perfectly. Linux installation just would
not continue beyond certain stage. Happened with both debian, suse and
rh cd's that I had. Finally swapped a cd-drive from another machine
and everything was fine. Then I got the cd-drives changed. 

Maybe you should try changing the drive.
