I personally think that sys administration experience is always useful.

In my opinion, you should never get into a job because of the monetary
benefits. If you get into a field that you love, you are bound to give it
your best and this usually results in good compensations.

In the old days before Linux became popular, the only way you could learn
sys adminstration was by enrolling for some course and then being a "junior
sys admin" for a year or so and learning the magic from the more
experienced guru to whom he is attached.
With Linux, you don't have to go through this apprenticeship. You have
your own system to experiment with. If you crash your machine no one else
is affected. You can make mistakes and learn from them.
Get some books on system administration. Read up on shell scripting and
perl scripting. Do interesting things with your linux machine. Download
and read the tons of documentation that is widely available for free.

Homer: Really? A restaurant? Well, now I don't know what to think.
