It is possible to learn a lot by doing a diskless computer related project
at home.Besides your own comp you need another one - can be an old pc.Both
should have network cards.You should have a floppy disk drive in the one you
designate as the diskless one.(whether it actually has a hard disk or
not -it does not make a diff).Both comps shld have nic. - something well
supported - can be old isa ne2k compatible etc.You need a cross cable - rj45
on both ends and crmped in a certain way.You can take a look at ltsp.org for
info and software .there are howtos and mini howtos you can consult.
