try this-
boot from your nt 4.0 (wkstn?) cd.choose repar then choose only to update
the system config -(this must be done carefully adter checking up all the
eventualities of wrong selection from menu).avoid replacing as many files as
possible.nt will basically run setup again but keep all the data you want to
retain safe - if you are doing it right.after this you may need to reinstall
drivers reconfigure your sytem etc.
this happened to me in a system that did not have any ide driver
installed.it worked.
