Hello everyone!
I have some problems and was hoping you could help me. I have a Boca
FDVSP34J (ISA PnP) modem. I installed Red Hat Linux 6.2 on my computer.
While the modem worked fine on Windows 95 earlier, now Linux is unable to
detect the modem on any of the COM ports (1,2,3 or 4). I used DEBUG under
DOS after removing the modem and it reported that COM1 and COM2 were
occupied. I then inserted the modem and it still reported that only COM1 and
COM2 were occupied. In Linux, when I ask for the modem to be queried on
COM3, it gives "Sorry, the modem is busy." Same with COM4.
When I asked my computer dealer about this, he said
that drivers are required for the modem to work under
Linux. However, many of the other modem installation
for Linux sites which I visited said nothing about
drivers for any of the modems and they were
automatically detected. When I reported this to him,
he insisted that Linux drivers are mandatory. Is he
correct? If so, where can I get the drivers? If not,
why isn't Linux able to detect the modem?
I disabled the PnP Aware function in my OS and now,
only the /dev/ttyS3 port gives modem is busy while
others give modem does not respond. Does this mean my
modem is in COM4?
I ran setserial -g for /dev/ttyS3 and /dev/cua1. Both
gave IRQ 3. The ttyS3 port gave UART unknown. Does that mean that I don't
have a COM4? Also, my /dev/ttyS2 and /dev/ttyS0 have the same IRQ 4. Could
that be the problem? If so, how do I change the IRQs?
On the Redhat site, it said that for PnP modems to run, something has to be
done with setserial or isapnptools. How do I do that?
Thanking you,
Best regards,
Amit
