Any chance you might have chosen a graphical login ?
This usually takes sometime to start up, and gives you
blinks on the screen like you describe.
At lilo try linux 3 if this works.
Change /etc/inittab from
id:5:initdefault:  to id:3:initdefault:
Faster that way....

P.S~~> The blinks are because of the X-server trying to choose the correct
resolution during startup..
