seems that you chose to start xdm or some display manager
and that your X config is having some problem.
start up into single usermode, edit the first line with out '#' in
/etc/inittab from
id:5:initdefault:
to read
id:3:initdefault:
then save and restart the machine, or at the lilo prompt instead of
single try init 3 and do the reconfiguration of X windows
