The same thing happens to me as well - the module loads sometimes and
at times it doesn't. What I do is, first "modprobe i810_audio" (if
you're using a kernel > 2.2.16). This initialized the card. Then
"rmmod i810_audio" and rmmod "ac97_codec" to remove the kernel
modules, and now load the alsa modules.

I know, 'tis a crude hack.. but it works. Maybe ALSA-0.5.9c will have
a fix for this. Try it out.
