The XF86Config file resides generally in \etc\X11\ and should be correctly
setup to start xserver.
Keep all the manuals ( of Monitor, Modem, Sound Card etc ) with you handy.
Type XConfigurator at prompt ( you must be logged in as root to do this )
all commands in Linux are case sensitive )
The horizontal and vertical refresh rates are given un the monitor manual.
For eg for a Samtron 45Bn they are 30-55 and 50-120 resp. if not sure give
on the lower side. Since it is a laptop i think you may try something
similar ( at your rosk of course!! )
Check out the site www.exocore.com/linux for precise tips on configuiration.
Also download the drivers wherever necessary.
You may check oput the book Red Hat Unleashed 6.2 .it gives Xconfiguration
in depth.
Give 16 bit color and 640x480 to start with.
also run setup ( type setup at prompt) and it will configure varios devices
i am no expert but all linux newbies goes through this so keep trying!!

hope this helps
Amit
