In .xinitrc file put the following for your specific needs :

startkde      - to start KDE
gnome-session - to start Gnome

KDE has got its own Window Manager. For gnome you can select any awailable Window 
Managers like WindowMaker, Afterstep etc. There is option in Gnome Control center for 
doing this.
