I think you misunderstood what Ajay said. He said that you can return to
the console from which you started X (the console which is open) using
the Ctrl-Alt-Fn key combination and either log out of that console or
lock it.
In which case the console is *not* open anymore.
Of course if one doesn't mind booting into X directly, what you
suggested is also a possible solution.
