  generally ppp would append some errors in the /var/log/messages file.
Those are more verbose if you put a "debug" option. So give a look and
find whats happening. You will generally find "exited with error *" where
* will be an integer. What each of those integers mean are recorded in the
man pages.
  May be those messages will help
