thanks kapil for your concern, but i dont think thats the problem. The
affectedaccounts use kde ( including mine ) so the relevant file is
.kderc. It appeared to be fine. 
  The problem is not with starting a window manager. If that was the case 
 something would have been there in .xsession-errors.

it appears theres some authentication problem. I wonder how it cropped up
on its own. ( I know thats impossible, It must have been me, who screwwed
up, not quite sure how i did it).

Still looking for ideas
