Thanks to all the enthusiastic folks for there comments.
The actual problem was somewhat different. The entire partition on which
/home was mounted had got filled and thus was not allowing graphical
login.
The way the partition got fileed is also interesting. Before the vacation
i had downloaded a postscript file. I just thought of trying kghostview.
It couldnot open the file, not only that it somehow expanded the file to
577Mb i.e. whatever empty space was left.
I am not sure whether to blame Kghostview as i had not tried it with my
trusted gv before that. Anyway thanks
