The newer versions of sendmail are far less painful - and the old Bat book
(ORA Sendmail) is for 8.8.8 - and lots of stuff has changed.

For a basic mailserver, you don't need to do too much configuration - unless
you go about writing custom mailers / transports, or maybe want to do some
 header rewriting etc.

See http://www.sendmail.net for lots of articles on configuring sendmail.
If you don't mind paying something for sendmail, go to http://www.sendmail.com
and get their paid version (easy config panel, tech support etc) - even an NT
 version ;)
