Sure this can be done and works. I have logged on to linux from solaris 
using xdmcp and I think I have als used excursion windows x server to 
connect with the machine. anyway if you can telnet simple telnet in set 
your display to your windows machine ip address and run xterm & . If the x 
server is running on your windows machine the xterm window will pop up.

 I don't think you can do it. Because it will search for mouse and all. 
That's
the reason you can not run 'startx' remotely, even though you can run
indivisual apps.
