Check up the system administrators book by Aeleen Frisch (O'Reilly). A
typical line looks like this:

* * * * *       <program with options>  <error or mailing options>
the stars mean these: (from 1 to 5)
minutes
hours
day of month
week of year (probably)
day of week

you can use things like */5 or 2-* or 2,3-6/2 in place of the star.
