Hi!
I have a HP Deskjet 670C connected to a Linux (Redhat 6.2) machine. I used
`Printtool' to configure it and selected the correct filter. (both `send EOF after
printing' and 'fix stair-stepping' are ON) lpt1 is linked via an `alias parport' line
in
/etc/conf.modules. Now the problem is that there are many times when the printer simply
hangs. The printer job shows up on `lpq' command but printer doesn't print anything.
After
a few minutes, lpq displays no jobs, even though the printer hasn't responded. At
times,
restarting lpdeamon and deleting entries in /var/spool/lpd/lp, including the two lock
files
restores the daemon and printer prints again (the job has to be given again. Old jobs
are
lost forever!), but the process doesn't work always. I have to use a combination of
various
tricks, sometimes including a reboot! In the beginning, when we tried to give the job
again
and again (to check for the printer response), the /tmp directory got so full that
Xwindows
refused to start with a clear indication of `can't open temporary files, disk full'.
I am
not sure that these two problems are related. I also keep using `lpc' facility to
`clean'
old crufty files and restart the lpdeamon. No single command seem to recover the print
facility. Nor does any `standard' protocol seem to exist.
The machine is Pentium I with 32 mB RAM. Swap is also 32 mB. (Note the problem
did
not occur at all when we were using RH 5.2 . but we upgraded through 6.0 and 6.1, the
problem has suddenly appeared. Any idea how to solve this problem. Does it have
anything to
do with the lpdeamon itself. If so, how to solve it? Thanks for any answers.

Ashok
