Dear List members,
A newbie question.

When you compile a kernel from a source tar ball, which directory must you
download the source into and compile into.

Some articles say /usr/src. Others suggest creating a new directory and then
creating a symbolic link from the old /usr/src/linux to the new directory.

Which option is better and why?

Philip

P.S. Has anyone installed Xfree86 using source files, not rpm. How difficult is
it?
