The latter option is usually better if you like to use a new kernel and try out
new features. It also gives you the added flexibility of adding a new patch
to a old kernel version. Also, if you use patches to upgrade the kernel,
it is the better option.

Follow the readme files and you can compile it easily enough.
However, downloading the necessary rpms might be a better idea.
