There should be a modem howto, but here goes...
If it is an external modem, it connects to one of the serial ports that
you have at the back of your computer. There are usually two serial ports,
and one of them will be taken up by your mouse if you have a serial mouse.
Just plug the serial cable to the serial port in which it fits. Plug the
other end in the modem. Plug the telephone line into the 'line' socket
of the modem, and optionally attach a telephone instrument to the 'phone'
socket of the modem. Plug in the power cable. Make sure all connections
are securely attached. You are ready to go!
Login as root and run the command
wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
and watch wvdial detect your modem. It usually detects almost every serial
modem that I have seen (gvc, lanbit, d-link etc.). Edit the wvdial.conf file
thus generated, insert your ISP login id and password, and run the command
wvdial
and you are connected to the net!
This should get you started. Any problems, get back here with a detailed
description.
