I too got the same problem..... I just reinstalled Linux.
i am also very much eager to know the reason for this problem.

You can get ur C programs by using the 'rescue' method while installing
the linux. Before u install, type 'rescue' at the boot prompt and access
the partition where ur files are stored by mounting that partition. After
that, u can actually see ur files, simply copy them to floppy or ur
windows partition (if u have) and .....then re-install....
