Do that. To go into it further, even Windows itself does not consider
shortcuts something connected with the filesystem. There are no APIs for
creating or manipulating shortcuts. The only way to do it from a Win32 app
is to use some COM interfaces exposed by Windows explorer. I have not tried
it, but I assume shortcuts would not work if you used an alternative shell
like Litestep.
IAC, shortcuts are pretty braindead. They are dependent on the Windows file
association method to work. And *that* is pretty fragile. All-in-all, it's
a typical 'doze situation wherein a good idea is badly implemented because
of the confusion over what should be part of the OS space and what should
be part of the application space.
