Glad to say the problem is solved.

| formail +1 -ds >> lih

works ... although with a slight twist.

By default digests from majordomo2 are MIME encoded digests, ie. each post in
the digest is a MIME attachment.
Now AFAICT, in this form formail is unable to split digests into individual
mails.
What has to be done is to ask for inline text digests. This is done by sending:
'set linux-india-help digest-text'
to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Once this is done, formail works perfectly .

I suggest that either the LIH faq Q3, reproduced below, be modified to reflect
the same or else a new Q can be added.

Q3. I am receiving the digests fine. But each individual post in the
digest arrives to me as a MIME attachment. I like the old fashioned
digests where the individual posts are inline better. How do I receive
those old fashioned digests?

A. Majordomo2 is an advanced mailing list manager. It does The Right
Thing by sending MIME encoded digests. If you want to receive the old
style inline digests, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
with the words 'set linux-india-help digest-text' (without the quotes) in the body
(not subject) of the email.
