 - chmod user filename(s)
For making "user" the owner of "filename(s)"

 - chmod user.group filename(s)
For making "user" the owner of "filename(s)" and giving "group"
group owner permission to the files

the octal number is of the format "0xyz"
where x is the permissions of user owning the file
y is the permissions of group owning the file
z is the permissions of anyother

   permissions are calculated as
         1 - Execute(for files)/Chdir(for directories) permission
         2 - Write permission
         4 - Read permission

add a combination of these numbers to calculate the required octal
   number. e.g. to give user read-write-execute , group read-execute
and anyother just execute permissions, the required octal number
   is:
      0 (1+2+4) (1+4) (1)
   or 0751

Hope that helps
