this is a pam hassle I think. the _best_ way (if you have a separate /home
partition of course) is to back up all vital conf files from /etc and other
places (you can at least read most of them as other users).
then, reinstall linux (without formating /home).
dumb solution I know ... but still, as you mention that the box has been
rooted, it's the best possible one.
