u see some of the us modems do not recognize indian dial tone so under
windows what I used to do is to as it not to wait for the dialtone (modem
options -control panel) lucent modems etc have known to have such problems.
Please do the same under linux. Besides make sure your modem is not a
winmodem other wise it does not work under linux. Also visit the modem
manufacturers for the correct dial strings
