why did you rename it boots very well with bzImage. Also please check that 
the compiled kernel is according to your h/w. Read the documentations in 
the /usr/src/linux directory for h/w  compatibility because addition of 
unnecessary drivers may cause the system such problems. Check processor 
type (very important)
to make vmlinuz
use make zlilo after make dep
