Thats predictable - when you say it will work "out of the Box" - it wont.
i dont want to install lnx4win. i want to use the original

IMHO;
Mandrake 7.2 takes a little long to install. (atleast longer than red hat
did).
It did "hang" and give up on me once when I chose expert installation -
reported some trouble on not being able to open Rpm database. You can find
what it is doing by checking the console messages on ALT+F3. If things are
running u will get messages like opening rpm......packages x of y.......n to
go......etc.
So I chose workstation class and it went through without a hitch. I'd suggest
u chose the defaults available.
As for i810, the native linux version has no trouble with it. Not sure on
lnx4win.
So - try a default installation method - not expert or custom.

PS:
One more thing, what file system have u partitioned for linux - ext2 or
reiserfs?
