This is what I do on my machine.
sidgeek@calvin:~$ pidof xmms
2365
sidgeek@calvin:~$ kill -9 2365
where xmms can be whatever command you wanna stop.
sidgeek@calvin:~$ killall -9 `command`
where command is whichever command you wanna stop.
