I tried ./configure --with-ssl=/usr but of no use , it gives the same error, also the 
log file says

configuring:566 : checking host system type
.....
.....
configuring:821 : checking for a BSD compatible install
configuring:874 : checking whether make sets ${MAKE}
configuring:821 : checking for SSL directory 
 
thats it , it stop there

Perhaps --with-ssl=/usr should do the trick. It may be looking into /usr/lib/lib. 
Check out config.log to see the exact error. It gives command line of
gcc/g++ for test programs+other error messages. So you can check whether it found it 
or not...

Still I wonder why /usr/lib is not checked?
