Type free on command prompt and look at second column from left, in second row.
That's what they call used memory on doze. You can assume rest to be free.
The free mem. reported by kernel is not true in strictest sense...
Or you can do 'cat /proc/meminfo'. It reports almost the same info. without any
formatting.
Usually on 256 MB, you should get around 120MB free by linux standard. By doze
standard, Used memory may range between 25MB to 70MB depending upon what you are
running. These figures are for desktop system. They will of course, vary if you
have mounted a database on it and so on..

P.S. Enable DMA if not already. That will speed up the things quiet a lot...
