Do a make distclean / make mrproper before compiling the kernel (backup your
.config file first).
Another thing you can do is to take a look at the .config file your failed
compile generated, and repeat make menuconfig to make any changes you could do
with (you can edit the .config file but it's a hassle) :)
Once you get a standard .config for the 2.4.x series, a "make oldconfig" will
do, to use the same old config file across different kernel versions.
