Hi,

Apologies for posting to this list, I'm not a subscriber. Please reply

 Hi

I tried compiling kernel 2.4.0 on my RedHat 6.2
 system
yesterday, and ran into these problems.

 1. I compiled the kernel with all the default
options,
 didn't change any of them.

when I tried to boot this new kernel, this is what
 i
 got

Loading new...... (thats the label I gave to this
 kernel)
Uncompressing Linux. Ok, booting the kernel.

And thats it, the machine freezes after that.

 2. I made a couple changes. I removed SMP support
which was there by default, and added vfat
filesystem
support . Now when I compiled the kernel, there
 were
still some files which were referencing smp
 related
symbols, so the compile failed. Specifically, the
 file
 ksyms.c wouldn't compile, because it couldn't find
 a
 definition for smp_num_cpus.

Before changing the kernel config through xconfig,
I had done make clean, and after changing the
 config, I
had done a make dep, and then the make bzImage.

 What could be the problem?
I don't know if this will help, but my linux runs
 on
the second of 2 hard disks, and lilo is installed
 on
 the primary's MBR.

TIA,
 Akshay
