Wow, am i glad u posted that, i was feeling quite isolated with my hdparm
post with exactly same result.
U can try hdparm -X66 /dev/hd? (UDMA 2, X67=udma3, X68-udma4)
If u have kernel 2.4 it allegedly "autotunes", chekc if u have autotune
turned on in the piix section in ada/ide section in kernel config.
If u dont find these work for you, u are where iam - stuck
