Hi,
If your motherboard/disk support ATA66 you can try :
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/hda6
append="idebus=66"
in your lilo.conf. This will work with the 2.4 kernel.
There should be a massive difference in performance thereafter.
