or do as slrn says, set the variable in .bashrc like this
export NNTPSERVER=my.news.server
If you have a vsnl account you can use news.vsnl.net.in to post and read
news. This is a server with high downtime but lots of groups. generally
the isp should have a news server to allow posting from it's clients.
