 right - but tin (and you'd need tin -r if it's a remote nntp server you are

 not necessarily.  some isps like satyam don't have one - and they have router
 blocked port 119 (nntp) thanks to a large amount of usenet spam coming from
 their netspace, which led to them (and vsnl) being under a udp some time back.
