Yaa, the flaky server was ftp://ftp8.freebsd.org. The complete URL is
ftp://ftp8.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/ISO-IMAGES/4.2-install.iso.
I completed the download from ftp2.freebsd.org with rest of the url being same.
