That's one thing - Debian _seems_ to prefer patching older versions of various
apps instead of moving to newer versions. Even the stuff in their testing
pool has several debian specific patches, most of the time. [I dont use
debian, saw this on a friend's debian box once, so I may well be wrong]

You might want to get the source in deb format from the testing pool and apply
the compressed folder and other patches to it.
