I had a similar problem on my cyrix 486-dx4 100 mhz. Only thing was my
problem was not consistant, sometimes (mostly) it would give the
annaconda and python error (you had diagnosed this). for the record even
RH6.1 did not install. Only RH6.0 would install w/o any problems.

I tried creating the partition tables with RH6.0 then after exiting from
disk druid (I switched my PC off !!!) I tried installing RH6.1/6.2. but
no luck there either. Please don't try these stunts on your pc !!

anyway, I took the easy way out, upgraded my harware, installed mandrake
7.2 and now I hope to live happily ever after :o)
